COMPANY HISTORY

Capital Candy Co, Inc. was founded in February, 1938 by George and Marion Burnes in Montpelier, VT, on a wing, a prayer and $700.00 in penny candy. Truly a family enterprise, George sold and delivered the goods with the help of his three sons, Jim, George, and Alden. Marion kept the books and “the boys” in line. All this from the family home.

World War II, rationing and the enlistment of all three sons created changes and challenges for the business. At the war's end, with the loss of son George at Normandy Jim with his wife Liz, and Alden and his wife Daphne once again joined George and Marion. In 1947 George reorganized the business and all three families contributed $1500 each incorporating Capital Candy. The company expanded into new product lines and territories and with renewed energy, Capital Candy became a “total jobber”.

Ten years later in 1955, Alden and Daphne sold their shares of the company to Jim and Liz. The company moved from its original home in Montpelier, VT to a larger, modernized facility in 1972. Jim and Liz were joined by their children Richard and Robin (Burnes) Blanchard and George and Prudy (Fisher) Burnes.

Expansion into grocery, frozen and refrigerated goods, wine and beer, merchandising services, and an expanded territory into five states made Capital Candy a well recognized and respected name in the industry throughout the region.

The years 1992-93 ushered in further changes. George and Prudy Burnes became sole owners of the company. In 2005, Ethan Burnes became the fourth generation to join the family business, becoming the General Manager in 2012.
